Health Fair Content

In general, the content of a health fair can be divided into three categories:

  • Awareness
  • Screenings
  • Demonstrations/Activities
Awareness

Awareness activities should be fun, interactive, and educational. Make every attempt to have all awareness and information booths be interactive rather than a stack of brochures on a table.

Some Ideas for Awareness Booths Include:

  • Health risk appraisal
  • Women's health issues
  • Humor
  • Nutrition
  • Breast self-examination
  • Back care
  • Dental health
  • Seat belt safety
  • Hunting safety
  • Regional environmental safety
  • Office safety
  • First aid
  • Fire safety
  • Elder care resources
  • Child care resources
  • Sexually transmitted diseases
  • Stress
  • AIDS
  • Cancer and nutrition
  • Testicular self-examination
  • Ergonomics
  • Self-defense
  • Boating safety
  • Fishing safety
  • Substance abuse
  • Disaster preparedness
  • Bicycle safety
Screenings

When deciding on screenings at the health fair, be sure to consider the confidentiality of the results. You might think about providing privacy screens for some of the tests such as weight or skin cancer screenings. Privacy screens are also important for body fat and flexibility measures; a quiet room is required for hearing screening.

Most screenings take several minutes per person, so be sure to schedule enough screeners to accommodate the expected participation without creating long waiting lines. Also, be aware of the location of the screening booths. Long lines may interfere with other booths. Some companies encourage employees to sign up in 15-minute blocks and avoid long lines.

Possible Heath Fair Screenings:

  • Blood pressure
  • Total cholesterol
  • Body composition
  • Carbon monoxide
  • Blood glucose
  • Mammography
  • Oral cancer
  • Skin cancer
  • Vision testing
  • Glaucoma
  • Hearing tests
  • Pulmonary function
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Height and weight
  • Anemia
  • Lead levels
  • Fitness Assessments
Demonstrations

Participation in a demonstration or activity can promote positive health behavior change. Look for innovative activities that will involve the participant.

  • Upper body massage
  • Healthy cooking demonstrations
  • CPR
  • Disaster preparedness
  • Personal safety
